Child Care Subsidy Facts Every Parent Needs to Know About

Thinking of enrolling your little one in childcare? Before you do, you might want to find out if you’re eligible for the childcare subsidy.

Take a look at these resources for further information about the Child Care Subsidy:

What is the Child Care Subsidy?

The Child Care Subsidy is an Australian Government initiative that offers assistance with the cost of approved childcare. The Child Care Subsidy was introduced on the 2nd of July 2018 and replaces the Child Care Benefit and Child Care Rebate.

So now that you know what the childcare subsidy is, here are the facts you need to know:

1. The Subsidy Isn’t Paid to the Family

Rather than being paid to the family who applied, this subsidy is paid directly to the childcare providers to reduce the fee you pay. Under prior schemes, payments were made as a lump sum. However, this is no longer the case. If you’ve claimed lump sums for childcare previously, you will need to make a new Child Care Subsidy claim through myGov.

2. You Must Meet Requirements to be Eligible

The Australian Government has criteria that parents must meet to be eligible for this subsidy. To be eligible you must be:

  • Caring for a child under the age of 13 who is not attending secondary school

  • Using an approved childcare service

  • Responsible for paying the child care fees

  • Meet immunisation and residency requirements

3. You Must Claim the Subsidy First Before Receiving It

The best way to claim the childcare subsidy is to go online and log in to your myGov account that is linked to your Centrelink. If you’re unable to make your claim online, call the Families line on 136 150. For more information, read this step by step guide on how to claim the child care subsidy.

4. Some Families Can Get Additional Support

An additional Child Care Subsidy may be available to some families which will be paid on top of the childcare subsidy. This will help provide extra support for childcare fees. There are three additional child care subsidy options available for people who are either:

  • A grandparent

  • Transitioning to work

  • Experiencing temporary financial hardship

5. You Need Supporting Documents to Make a Claim

A series of documents must be provided before submitting your claim. Make sure any required documentation is ready to go when you make your claim. The type of information you will be asked for may fall under the following topics:

  • Childcare

  • Medical

  • Financial

  • Employment/work

  • Living arrangements

  • Residence details

  • Study

  • Relationships

Along with your own documents, your parents, partner or guardian may be required to provide documents to support your claim. For some applicants, further supplementary documents may also be needed. You will have 14 days following your submission to provide supplementary documents if they have been requested.

Take a look at the full list and description of the supporting documents required.

6. Not Everyone Gets the Same Amount

A number of factors affect how much of a subsidy you will receive. These factors include:

  • Your income

  • The type of childcare you use

  • The amount of time you spend working or improving your work skills

See how much you can get out of the childcare subsidy.

7. Your Child Must be in Approved Childcare

Not all childcare options will allow you to be eligible for the Child Care Subsidy. You must choose a service that has Australian Government approval. The approved childcare options include:

  • In Home Care

  • Family Day Care

  • Centre Based Day Care – long and occasional daycare

  • Outside school hours care – before, after and vacation care
